This volume consist of papers which provide an overview of the presentations at the Second International Academic Seminar: Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting at the intersection of qualitative, quantitative and mixed method research. Experiences from Africa and Europe. This seminar took place June 2017, in Brussels. The contributions in this book focus on research’s crucial role in abandoning female genital mutilation/ cutting (FGM/C), gaps in the research, the need to integrate an intersectionality perspective in the research and evaluations of current strategies for abandoning the practice. 

This book shares insights and examples of qualitative, quantitative and mixed method research from a wide range of countries including Belgium, Egypt, Ethiopia, The Gambia, Ireland, Mali, Nigeria, Norway, Portugal, Senegal, Sweden, the Netherlands and the UK. The topics discussed in the chapters focus on the medicalisation of FGM/C, associations between FGM/C and child marriage, the practice’s estimated prevalence, use and interpretations of survey data, surveying knowledge, attitudes and experiences, dos and don’ts when organizing focus groups on FGM/C, assessing FGM/C in refugee populations and attitudinal changes among generations, research methods on behaviour change regarding FGM/C, male involvement, social norm change in migration and transposing human rights framework on FGM/C.
